Authorities have released the identity of the person killed in a crash on Interstate 287 in White Plains on Monday near exit 6.

"It is with deep sadness that I announce that Jamil B. Wilson, a dedicated Thruway Maintenance Worker in our Cross Westchester Expressway Maintenance Section, tragically passed away yesterday," Thruway Authority executive director Frank Hoare wrote in a statement.

The crash happened Monday afternoon on the westbound side of the Thruway near Exit 6. Video from the scene showed a black SUV overturned on its side and a State Department of Transportation vehicle taped off along the roadway. Several emergency responders and DOT vehicles were also at the scene.

The right and center lanes were closed for hours following the crash, and the Exit 6 entrance ramp was also shut down. All lanes and ramps have since reopened.

Wilson was 47 years old and worked for the Thruway Authority for nearly six years, according to officials.

Earlier Coverage

"Jamil and other employees were performing mowing operations on the Cross Westchester Expressway (I-287) in White Plains when he was struck by a vehicle. The other crew members were not injured," wrote Hoare.

Additional details on the incident haven't been released yet. New York State Police are investigating the crash.

"Our maintenance employees are the heart and soul of this organization. Roadside workers risk their lives every day to ensure the safety of all drivers on the road, and Jamil embodied that very dedication and commitment. He is survived by his lifelong partner, Taidra, and their two children," Hoare wrote.

Gov. Kathy Hochul also put out a statement on the tragedy.

"I extend my deepest condolences to Jamil's family and friends, and to the men and women of the Thruway Authority's workforce as they grieve during this difficult time," Hochul wrote.
