An overnight sewer main break forced the closure of part of Route 28 in downtown Westfield as repair crews worked through the night to fix the problem.
Officials shut down the eastbound lanes of Route 28 near Central Avenue shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday after the sewer line burst. The closure stretched for several blocks through the downtown area while crews made emergency repairs.
By early Thursday morning, much of the roadway that had been dug up appeared to be restored as workers wrapped up the project.
Westbound traffic remained open, allowing access into downtown Westfield and the nearby train station. However, eastbound lanes remained closed while crews completed the final stages of the repair.
