Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Thursday the start of the largest signal and track replacement project in MTA history.

The $1.9 billion project, funded by congestion pricing, will replace 1930s-era equipment with modern technology along the A and C train routes in Brooklyn and Queens.

Officials say the new signal system, known as Communications-Based Train Control, will provide faster, more reliable service.

“Upgrading nearly 100-year-old signals does more than just modernize infrastructure that is long-overdue – it is a critical part of our plan to run better and more frequent subway service, shortening waits and slashing delays,” Hochul said.

MTA Construction & Development President Jamie Torres-Springer called the project a “transformational investment” that will improve travel for hundreds of thousands of riders.

The project is expected to be completed in 2032.
