A man has died after an incident at an East Harlem shelter Friday evening that is now under investigation by the NYPD.

Police say officers responded to a 911 call reporting an assault at the Quality Services for the Autism Community Shelter on East 129th Street just before 5:45 p.m.

When officers arrived, they found a 33-year-old man unresponsive on the ground while being restrained by shelter staff members.

Officers immediately began CPR and called for EMS. The man was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police sources say that they were called to the shelter after the man allegedly attacked a 54-year-old female staff member. She was taken to a local hospital in stable condition.

According to police sources, the man was being taken into custody at the time of the incident.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of the man's death. The man's identity has not yet been released.

The NYPD's Force Investigation Division is investigating the incident.
