Following a deadly crash earlier this week, Branchburg officials are calling for safety improvements along Route 202.

A Branchburg man was killed after his Ford sedan caught fire following a collision with a tractor-trailer on Route 202 and Holland Brook Road early Monday evening.

Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the crash.

Branchburg Mayor James Schworn says the intersection has been a safety concern for years.

Since Route 202 is a state-controlled highway, any major improvements he says would need to come from the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

After the fatal crash, he says the township will take a more proactive approach with the NJDOT to make changes aimed at preventing future tragedies and are prepared to explore funding options.

According to New Jersey State Police fatal crash statistics, six people have been killed on Route 202 in Branchburg over the past five years.

Residents and local leaders say the latest crash underscores the need for action at the intersection, which they hope can be made safer through roadway upgrades and other traffic safety measures.
