Hazmat teams were called to the Marcy Houses after a buildup of residue caused a steam leak in the boiler.

According to NYCHA, the residue tested positive for asbestos, and the area has been restricted. The leak affected the exterior walls of buildings 502 and 504 Marcy Avenue.

Residents from the affected buildings on Marcy Street have been offered relocation options following the incident. Residents were also offered food and transportation services.

Council member Chi Osse posted online that, due to the incident, nine buildings in the area would have no heat. Parking lots would also be closed off.

There is no word at this time on how long the buildings will remain closed off or if there was additional structural damage due to the leak.
