A fast-moving fire tore through a multifamily home in Borough Park early Friday, leaving two firefighters and one civilian with minor injuries.

The flames broke out around 6:45 a.m. inside a home on 39th Street. FDNY officials say the fire started in the cellar, then climbed through the upper floors and into the attic. It even spread into the attic of the building attached next door.

By the time firefighters arrived, thick white smoke was pouring from the back of the home. Crews used multiple ladders to get inside and stop the spread. It took until just after 9 a.m. to bring the fire under control.

Neighbors say the smoke filled the entire block.

Alan Goldstone, who has lived in the neighborhood for more than 20 years, said he woke up struggling to breathe.

"I could not breathe in my own apartment," he said. "I checked Citizen, and it was an inferno. They've had a couple issues here before but nothing like this."

FDNY says investigators are now working to figure out what caused the fire. The injured firefighters and civilian are expected to be OK.
