Residents say they are frustrated about the construction of the 3rd Avenue bike lane safety project.
The project was slated to have an initial summer 2024 Phase 1 start date from the state Department of Transportation, but it seems to have stalled.
The project would create a bike lane that would span the length of 3rd Avenue in Sunset Park, with daylighted sidewalks and reinforced pedestrian walkways.
According to DOT's proposal for the plan, 14 people have died in the intersection since 2016, with one of the proposed options introducing a median protected bike lane, with increased visibility for turning cars on the length of the street that runs underneath the Gowanus Expressway section of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway.
"I refuse to attend another vigil for a member of the community who has died here," said transportation chair for Community Board 7 Katie Walsh. "People treat it like the highway that is above it, people are speeding, cars are not where they need to go, and there is none of the facilities to make it safe for pedestrians."
Bikers say right now, between the visibility and the noise of the area, it is far too dangerous to traverse.
"I want to go to Costco, to Industry city, having this would make my life better but right now cars are double parked, you cannot see, and you definitely could not hear a bell from a Citi Bike with this noise," said resident Hakan Topal.
Walsh says she will continue to push for the project to move forward, calling on local elected officials like Councilwoman Alexa Aviles.
In a statement to News 12, Avile's office told 12 "My office will continue to ensure that all stakeholders are consulted."
News 12 also reached out to the NYC DOT, which did not explain the delay from its initial implementation start date or offer a new date, adding that the project remains in development.
