The 3rd Street bridge in Gowanus will close today and then sporadically for the next 18 months in order for crews to make repairs, according to the Department of Transportation.
The DOT says the bridge will shut down until 4 p.m. Tuesday.
The bridge will undergo repairs for damage sustained during Superstorm Sandy.
Officials say the work is needed to fix mechanical damages.
A spokesperson for the DOT says the bridge is still safe and operational.
Many people use the bridge as a walkway or bike path. The DOT says the construction will make things a little difficult for people using the bridge to access the subway.
They recommend planning ahead or using the Carroll Street Bridge or the 9th Street Bridge as alternatives.
