The zoo says although the North American River Otter is the only species that are not endangered or threatened, welcoming new pups into the zoo is still important.

Four North American River otter pups made their public debut at Bridgeport's Beardsley Zoo today.

The otter pups are 7 weeks old and had their first vet check.

The two boys and two girls range from around 2.5 to 3 pounds.

They're all healthy and now back in the nest with mom.

The visit included gender and weight checks as well as a health evaluation.

The otter species received heartbeat and teeth checks and also got their vaccines.

The North American River otters are one of 13 otter species across the globe.

Zoo officials say the pups will likely remain in their nest for a couple more weeks before the public can view them in their habitat.

The pups don't have names yet. Zoo officials say they will suggest some names before the public votes on them.

The public is welcome to view the pups online through an animal cam.
