Basement fire in East New York leaves 4 injured, 2 hospitalized

Four people were injured after a basement fire broke out early Friday morning at a multi-family home in East New York, according to the Fire Department of the City of New York.
FDNY says crews were called to a two-story building at 389 New Jersey Ave., between Belmont and Sutter avenues, around 5:32 a.m. for reports of a basement fire.
In total, 21 units — about 79 firefighters and EMS personnel — responded.
Officials say four civilians were injured. Two people were taken to the hospital, while the conditions of those hospitalized have not yet been released.
The fire is now under control, but visible damage was left behind at the home.

Maria Gonzalez, who lives nearby, said the scene was chaotic.
“I just heard people screaming and then I saw fire things,” Gonzalez said. “I look out, saw smoke. I see a lady with no pants. I tried to help. I tried to give clothes to her. You know I’m trying to help — but it’s the second fire here.”
FDNY says fire marshals have been notified and are investigating what caused the fire.
