A Bensonhurst park will get a $40 million makeover as part of the mayor's PlaNYC 2030 initiative, officials announced Wednesday.
At a news conference, officials admitted Drier Offerman Park, constructed in the 1930s, has been neglected. The 77-acre park is now home to dirty lots and rundown fields filled with weeds.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the parks commissioner want to build new baseball and soccer fields, a playground and a bike path. An amphitheater is also planned for the park.
The renovations are expected to be completed by 2011.
The work at Drier Offerman Park is part of a $1.2 billion improvement plan for city parks. Bloomberg has said he wants all New Yorkers within a 10-minute walk to a park by 2030.
