The West Indian American Day Parade brought music, culture, and good vibes to Brooklyn on Labor Day—but just a few hours later, that energy turned.
Police say at least seven people were hurt in a series of four shootings and one slashing after the parade ended Monday night.
One of the most recent shootings happened around 9:30 p.m. near Rochester Avenue and Eastern Parkway. That’s where a 14-year-old boy was shot in the hand and back. He’s now recovering at Maimonides Hospital and is expected to be okay.
Things started turning violent shortly after the parade wrapped:
  • 5:30 p.m.: A man in his 20s was shot in the leg and a woman in her 40s was grazed by a bullet near Eastern Parkway.
  • 6:45 p.m.: Two men were shot near Classon Avenue—a 26-year-old hit in the shoulder and a 21-year-old in the chest.
  • Just minutes later, around 6:55 p.m., two more men were shot near Nostrand and Sterling—a 53-year-old man was hit in the neck and right leg, and a 40-year-old man was shot in the ankle. Police say a person of interest has been taken into custody in connection with this case, but no charges have been announced yet.
  • In a separate incident, a man was found with multiple slashes to his body near Eastern Parkway and Nostrand, but he refused medical help and wouldn’t speak to officers.
As of Tuesday morning, no arrests have been made in most of the cases. News 12 has reached out to the parade organizers to get their thoughts on the violence.
