U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials say they may stop inspections at the Red Hook Container Terminal, possibly compromising hundreds of jobs. Border officials say they do not have the resources to keep inspectors at every port across the nation, and that 700 jobs would be lost. After meeting with Customs brass, Rep. Michael Grimm (R-N.Y.) says the agency would not force more than 3,500 uninspected trucks onto city roadways in order for them to reach another inspection site. Local store owners say they are skeptical of the move since they depend on terminal workers and truckers for business.
