Late hip-hop legend Biggie Smalls returned to Brooklyn Friday in the form of a 9-foot statue.
Christopher Wallace, better known as The Notorious B.I.G, was born in Bed-Stuy, and ttransformed the world of hip-hop.
The sculpture in DUMBO is made of bronze, stainless steel and resin. It includes speakers that play some of The Notorious B.I.G's greatest hits.
Carribean-born artist Sherwin Banfield said Biggie played a monumental role in his youth.
The New York-based artist added that he wanted to pay tribute to one of the pioneers of hip-hop with the statue.
"One of his most famous positive lyrics is 'Stay far from timid, only make moves when your heart's in it, and live the phrase 'the sky's the limit'... he's offering you his microphone, which is his throne, which is what helped him become the king of New York," said Banfield. "I wanted to show that yes, you can be tough, but you can also show love, or spread love as he would say."
The sculpture is located at Clumber Corner Park in DUMBO. The statue plays music on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Downtown Brooklyn and DUMBO Art Fund funded the project.
"Many people, this is their first stop in Brooklyn and their first experience, so really having this monument right here, welcoming everyone to the borough is incredible," said Alexandria Sica, president of DUMBO Improvement District.
The statue will be up at the corner of Washington and Prospect streets until October 2023.
