Police say a man is accused of vandalizing a Sept. 11 memorial in Coney Island.
The incident happened early Friday morning at MCU Park, home of the Brooklyn Cyclones.
Police say Elliot Baez, a 58-year-old homeless man, has been arrested and charged with criminal mischief in the third degree. They say he smeared white paint on the memorial, covering the face of at least one fallen FDNY member.
Residents say they are shocked that someone would show such blatant disrespect.
Last year, the park's Jackie Robinson statue was also defaced. Residents say they hope these shocking acts don't become a trend.
Police had said earlier that they were seeking a woman in connection with the vandalism, but they have now identified their suspect as a male.
