Residents in Sheepshead Bay are furious that their local post office has been closed since Feb. 2021.
If you search the post office in Google, it says the location at East 18th Street and Jerome Avenue is open for business. That’s not the case. A fire on the second floor of the building forced the United States Postal Service to close the location.
The office has since resumed deliveries, but the office is still closed.
There are two mailboxes there, but for bigger packages or to buy stamps, people have to go to the post office on Avenue X and Nostrand Avenue or on Avenue U and 23rd Street. Both are about a 20-minute walk from the closed office.
Residents say the extended closure is unacceptable.
In a statement, the USPS said that the landlord of the building has not made the repairs that are needed to fully reopen the post office.
News 12 reached out to the landlord for comment but did not respond to the request.
