An abandoned home in Dyker Heights that has caught fire six times in the past two years is now set to be demolished following last week’s deadly blaze.
The Department of Buildings has issued a violation notice recommending a full demolition of the home on 67th Street, as well as grading and fencing of the site. Neighbors had long voiced concerns about the property, which had become a hotspot for illegal squatting.
The most recent fire, which broke out last week, killed a 40-year-old woman who officials believe was living inside the home illegally. The FDNY is still investigating the cause of the fire.
Local leaders are now pushing for stricter monitoring of abandoned properties to prevent similar tragedies. Councilwoman Susan Zhuang is advocating for the Squatter Information Bill, which would require FDNY and NYPD to track and report locations with known squatters.
While a timeline for demolition hasn’t been set, the city’s decision marks a major step toward addressing safety concerns in the neighborhood.
