Summertime is here, and with a holiday weekend ahead of us, families will be out and about, but this year many are concerned with how their family can enjoy the holiday safely.
The core responsibility for the Administration for Children's Services is to make sure all children in New York City are safe, which is why they launched their Summer Safety Campaign.
"We believe the best way to keep children safe is to make sure that their parents have the information and support that they need,” says David Hansell, ACS commissioner.
First, the big concern is how to protect your kids from COVID-19.
"Any kids over the age of 2 really should be wearing some type of face covering when they are out in public,” says Hansell.
He says social distancing is as important for kids as it is for adults.
Another concern during the summer is fireworks. Hansell says parents should know that even sparklers put kids at risk.
"They can cause burns; things can get in people's eyes or kids’ eyes. So parents need to be very, very careful and teach their kids that fireworks are not something to play around with,” says Hansell.
Beaches are now open, and families want to enjoy some fun in the sun, but even with lifeguards on duty, ACS officials say it is important you watch your kids in or near the water and make sure they are social distancing.
“The CDC tells us the number one cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 is accidental drowning,” says Hansell.
ACS is also launching a big campaign to prevent hot car deaths with children.
