Opioid addiction is on the rise across the country, and activists in Brooklyn and elsewhere are calling it an epidemic.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo even created a task force earlier this month to fight the issue.

The say some of the problem comes from doctors prescribing too many of the drugs.

"You try this, and you're addicted in three to five pills," says Donna Mae DePola, president of the Resource Training and Counseling Center, which recently opened new centers in Sunset Park and Bay Ridge to fight the growing problem.

Commonly prescribed opioids include OxyContin and Vicodin. The classification also includes the street drug heroin.

Activists say they want insurance companies to increase their coverage for addiction treatment programs.
