The Mental Health Project hosted a Sunday town hall at the Riverdale Neighborhood Houses about mental health and safety in city jails.
Panelists and advocates focused on several initiatives to stop the cycle of incarceration for people with mental illness or have experienced homelessness. One of them is the “Correct Crisis Intervention Today” campaign, which will establish a peer-driven response to mental health crises.
“The public health aspect is people with mental health conditions are not getting adequate care, especially in prison you're not gonna get that so we're trying to change that whole system,” said Marco Barrios, a representative from the Urban Justice Center Mental Health Project.
