An 71-year-old man is still in the hospital after he was struck by a teen driving a stolen car in East New York Sunday morning. News 12 has learned technology helped police catch the teen.
Surveillance video captured the moments the man was mowed down by a 15-year-old in a stolen car. Mohamed Alhaddad was working at the corner store when it happened.
“I was behind the register, at like, about 9:30,” Alhaddad recalled. “You know, all I heard was a loud noise, and I just look at the cameras and see, like, the whole pole is missing and a car crashing there."
It happened at the intersection of Pennsylvania and Hegeman avenues in East New York. The video shows the man standing by the lamp post when out of nowhere the driver slams into him. The teen driver then jumps out of the car and takes off running moments before the cops arrive.
"That was crazy,” Alhaddad said. “I had no clue he was 15 so when I found that out that just blew my mind."
Many New Yorkers keep an AirTag in their car just to remember where it's parked but, in this case, the owner used it to track down their stolen car.
"I'm about to put one in my car too now, just in case,” Alhaddad said.
Police sources say the victim, whose car was stolen Sunday morning in the 90th Precinct, followed their car using the AirTag, spotted it, called 911, and then the suspect took off and crashed.
"That's technology No. 1, but my personal preference on when you out here doing things that you're not supposed to be doing, you reap what you sow,” said neighbor Rodney Bostic. “Karma is real."
Police arrested the teen and charged him with several felonies. News 12 was told the victim is in the hospital but is stable.
