The FDNY on Monday honored 31-year-old f
irefighter Timothy Klein, who was killed Sunday afternoon while fighting a three-alarm house fire.
Firefighters took the bunting ceremony to honor their fallen brother outside Engine Company 257 and Ladder Company 170 in Canarsie. Ladder Company 170 was where Klein worked for the entire six years he was a member of the FDNY. A small memorial was also set up for him in front of the building.
"When I think about Timmy, I think about he had a positive impact on everyone he met.,” said Keith Klein, Klein’s cousin and fellow firefighter. “It's quite a loss inside and outside of the firehouse."
Klein was no stranger to the sacrifices firefighters make each day. News 12 first heard from Klein after the death of his friend and colleague, Steve Pollard, back in 2019. Klein was from Queens and followed in the footsteps of his father who is a retired member of the FDNY. After graduating from the fire academy, he officially joined the department on Dec. 28, 2015 and was assigned to Ladder 170 in Canarsie.
"This firehouse in particular has been getting a lot of hits lately but you can tell the firehouse and the community bond is strong," said NYC public advocate Jumaane Williams. "I think this is a hard hit for everybody in this community."
Klein is the 1,157th member of New York's Bravest to die in the line of duty, following Jesse Gerhard who died on Feb. 16, 2022. He is survived by his father, mother, three sisters and girlfriend.
Funeral arrangements have not been finalized.
