Some New Jersey Republican lawmakers have proposed a bill that would require all school bus drivers to undergo random drug and alcohol testing.

The proposal comes a little more than a week after legal recreational marijuana went on sale in New Jersey.

The bill would apply to all drivers of vehicles used by the state Board of Education when it comes to driving students to and from school.

Republican Assemblyman Robert Auth said in a statement, "Parents deserve the peace of mind that comes with knowing their children are in the safest hands when they get on the bus in the morning.”

The statement continued, "Our bill addresses gaps in drug and alcohol testing protocols and ensures every single school bus driver is being held to the same standard."

The bill also applies to any private or parochial school bus driver.

Anyone who tests positive for drugs or alcohol -- or refuses testing -- would immediately be ineligible to drive.
