All beaches in Brooklyn remain closed today as Tropical Storm Ernesto continues to affect the region. The city has issued a warning to beachgoers to stay out of the water due to hazardous conditions.
The National Weather Service has issued a high rip current risk for Brooklyn, forecasting waves of up to four feet high. This comes as the storm has left rough waters and dangerous swimming conditions.
The New York City Park's Department says lifeguards will be present on the beaches to ensure beachgoers are being safe. Despite their presence, the city is once again reminding people that swimming is prohibited.
If you do encounter a rip current, experts recommend the following safety tips:
  • Remain calm
  • Avoid swimming directly against the current
  • Swim parallel to the shore to escape the current
  • Once free, swim at an angle away from the current towards the shore
