Some Long Island couples were thrown a major curve ball when they learned the caterer providing the reception was no longer servicing their wedding venue.
Melanie Trudell and her fiancé Jordan found out just days ago that the hospitality company, Lessings, was no longer an option at Smithtown Landing County Club.
"The reason we chose Smithtown Landing was because it was Lessings and we wanted Lessings to host our wedding so that was upsetting at first," Trudell says.
Trudell says she found out that Lessing, who had a contract with the Town of Smithtown to cater events at Smithtown Landing County Club, was recently replaced with another caterer after their contract expired.
"It was kind of crazy, all of a sudden we don't have a venue anymore," Trudell says.
Fortunately, Director of Catering for Lessings Steve Kirschbaum, says the company reached out to everyone who had a contract and provided them with solutions, one which includes staying at Smithtown Landing.
"If they're interested in staying in Smithtown Landing with the new operator coming in Jan. 1, we could refund their deposit and the company coming in has said they would honor the contract as well," Kirschbaum says.
Lessings is also offering a complete refund.
Trudell and her fiancé decided to relocate their event to another one of Lessing's 13 venues, the Mansion at Oyster Bay.
Trudell says the switch was painless and hopes it will be the same for other couples.
"He was super nice - nice to talk to - very accommodating so it worked out," Trudell says.
The Town of Smithtown released a statement, reading in part, "The town has already begun the transition process, working together with Lessings and the new caterer to ensure that every event taking place after Dec. 31, is a memorable and successful affair."
