An Allerton pharmacy is helping its community far out by ensuring new parents have baby formula for their new family members.
Throughout the pandemic, America saw shortages of all kinds, from toilet paper, to masks to hand sanitizer, and now its baby formula.
It's been wiped out from many shelves, which has forced parents to pay high prices and travel far just to feed their children.
Benjamins Pharmacy and Surgical on Allerton Avenue says they've been dealing with the shortage firsthand since February, as have many parents. But as of late, they've been able to keep their stock up, which is why they're offering free-at-home formula delivery to any and all parents.
Pharmacist Benjamin Yunus says the shortage started a couple of months ago when Abbott Nutrition recalled several batches that make up a large portion of the supply.
Formula soon flew off the shelves, which left many parents concerned as some infants only do well with specific brands.
Yumus says the shortage could last a few more months, that's why the pharmacy kept a pulse on the brands needed in the area and had their distributors restock.
Now, they're offering free delivery of baby formula to anyone in all boroughs.
All that parents have to do is send them a text and they do not have to be a current customer.
Yunus says their goal is to make it easier for local parents and help make sure all children can go to bed full.
"They always come in with a baby, they always come in with a child. And I'm going, 'What is going on? Why does a mother have to come in with a baby? Why can't we have the formula delivered?' It's very satisfying and gratifying that these customers can come and finally find the formula. They'll go 'Benjamin, you don't get it, we've been to nine pharmacies, nine stores, and nobody has it,'" Yunus says.
