Rep. Hakeem Jeffries announced that $963,000 in funding will be given to the Billion Oyster Project as they aim to restore the Paerdegat Basin shoreline in Canarsie.
The organization will install a large oyster reef, which they believe will help filter the water and create a home for other animals. They won't be doing this alone, however. This nearly $1 million project will also serve as an opportunity for students in the New York Harbor School to have hands on learning.
The young scientists are studying for marine careers and will get a chance to learn more about marine biology, scuba diving, boat operations, and aquaculture.
"I think it's beneficial for colleges just to see that I've had the experience of doing lab work, testing water and have that experience already that many kids won't have," said Mykala, a New York Harbor School student.
The project isn't expected to start for at least another year.
