2ds agoJohn F. Kennedy International Airport is undergoing a nearly $19 billion transformation that could have an impact on travel plans.
The redevelopment project looks to create one unified JFK Airport. Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton promises a world-class airport with improvements to outdated terminals that were built more than 50 years ago.
Officials say the airport will also get two new terminals. Terminal 1 will become an enormous state-of-the-art facility and Terminal 6 will be transformed into a 1.15 million-square-foot space with a redeveloped roadway, new widebody aircraft gates and a new underground transportation center.
All of the upgrades will bring massive disruptions for travelers starting now at the peak of the travel season.
Some of the immediate changes include the relocation of the taxi stands at Terminal 5. They will move to the ground level of the yellow garage.
The Port Authority recommends travelers sign up to get alerts from JFK to stay up to date with any changes.
