Hundreds gathered at South Side High School in Canarsie Sunday to compete in the 43rd annual Adventists Youth Ministries Olympics. It was the first time since the 80's the event returned to Brooklyn.
Runners from all over the northeast compete all year to qualify for the Olympics. The track meet was created for runners who were unable to make it to their school's Saturday track meets due to religious reasons.
“As Adventists, we are not able to participate in any sports or activities on Saturday which is the Sabbath ," said James Lambert, the Olympic commissioner for the Northeast Conference.
Runners of all ages from 8-years-old to 60 years old raced to receive a medal. The meet was an all-day event starting at 10 a.m. Sunday.
