Concerned residents, business owners and community leaders attended an event in Red Hook Saturday as part of the third annual "Global Frackdown."
Sonny's Bar is one of many businesses hit hard during Superstorm Sandy. The owner says climate change is a big concern, and wants to bring to light the connection between that and fracking.
Opponents want Gov. Andrew Cuomo to step in and ban fracking, a fossil fuel drilling technique that blasts water mixed with chemicals underground to break open rocks and release oil and gas. They say the process uses toxic chemicals and releases methane gas, which has been linked to numerous cases of sickness, drinking water contamination and is harmful to the environment.
The group says they will continue the fight until there is a permanent ban in New York state.
