Welcome back to ask the borough president here on News 12 Brooklyn as BP Antonio Reynoso with us to take your questions and we're gonna get right back to the phones right now because we've got Sheila joining us. She is calling us from Coney Island. Shelia. Thanks for calling in. What's your question for the borough president? Hello. Hello. Hi, Sheila. How are you? I'm good, good, good. What uh what's your question for B pr also? My name is Sheila. Not Sheila. I'm sorry, you got it. Sheila. Well, please correct that. Thank you. Hi, how are you? I'm good. Thank you. So, what's your question, Sheila? My, oh, my question is um to uh borough president Reynoso. Go ahead. All right. I'm sorry, I hear I hear the feedback because I'm looking at you, turn off the TV. Put the volume down to the TV. OK. Um Question is um I gotta go in another room. It's confusing me. Yes. My question. My question is this um I'm in favor for the casino that is proposed to come out to Coney Island and there's a lot of people including the community board that is against it. My question to uh the borough president is, is that the last stop for this idea? Because I think it's a great idea to bring these resources that we definitely need in Coney Island. And even though there's pros and cons in everything we should think about the economic development that it can do for this very poor community. And um is that the last stop at that point? And who makes the decision, the final decision? Is it a yay or nay Sheila? Thank you. Thank you for the question, Sheila. I appreciate that. And uh yeah, this is obviously the casinos were a big deal then we kind of, it's kind of gone away, but the conversations are ongoing right now. So what do you got to say about what's going on there? The community board uh is one part of a much larger process. And I actually think uh the proposals haven't come out yet, Chila. So we actually don't know what the casinos are offering to the local communities. We don't know how they construct what the construction is gonna look like, what their plans are. Uh So it's a bit premature even for the community board. So I've made a decision to make a vote on whether or not we want or don't want a casino. So I would actually say, um we're in the beginning stages of this process. Uh We have a long way to go. Uh We haven't even seen the plans yet. So I, I would say if you care deeply about it, just stay, stay uh stay informed, I guess. Uh And any time there's an opportunity for you to come out do so, and we're gonna be paying attention to the proposal. Once the proposal comes out, it's gonna help us dictate what we believe, what position we believe we should take. But this is far from over and the community board I actually think was a premature vote that they took without knowing all the facts. OK. And I, and this is an issue as you mentioned, that is still ongoing here. We're waiting for the actual proposals. But Sheila thank you for the question. As we make our way towards that, we talk about a project that's maybe getting off the ground, something else that may be closing. Suny downstate. Uh This has got a lot of people in the borough talking over there, especially in East Flatbush, what's going on there. Uh What's the future of this medical center? I know a lot of people are concerned. Yeah, rightfully so uh Suny Downstate and just our medical centers or the medical world uh in Central Brooklyn is so deeply important, tons of jobs, uh health care access and opportunities for folks that traditionally don't get it. So sun downstate is important. The problem here is that it's just in a hole uh and just like every other institution that I feel like it is run by the state of the city, we have the MT A for example, and it just gets into like this level of disrepair where it costs so much to fix it and to get it back to where we wanted to get to night is the exact same way. Um So Downstate has fallen to what I think is a government divestment. Um But it's gotten so bad that we might not be able to keep it. Uh up. The building is in disrepair. So, what I'm hearing is that there is a conversation about being able to move Suny downstate somewhere else. So we won't lose Sunni downstate. Uh But that where it currently is might not be where it is in the future. So, unfortunately, that, that's, that's where, where we are. Um, but nothing is done. This is a proposal that is gonna be sent forth by the governor, but yes, we will still have the institution. The physical building might not be where it'll stand. So people might still be able to get the services that they are getting. Now. It just may not be in the same physical location and then I have limited information and I think the public has limited information. We're trying the best we can to get more. Ok. So we, we, we'll stay tuned on that and what's been going on there. Speaking of that commercial waste zones, uh this is one of those topics that, you know, you have been very involved in. I know you presented a bill initially in your time in City council. Now that is becoming a reality. Tell us how Brooklynites are gonna be impacted by this going forward. Yeah. So in this one, what we wanted to do right now in the city of New York there before there were 80 trash companies that did work on our streets. So if there were five stores on block or five buildings on one block, they could each have a different car to pick up their trash. So you would see five car, uh, trucks run through your block unnecessarily. So I said, why isn't one truck picking up for all five stores just do something more efficient. So we have here in this map is there'll be three carters in every single one of these territories, there won't be 80 anymore. So it won't be more than three trucks on a block. Um uh it's more efficient. It's gonna cut 1 million miles of truck traffic. AAA month, 12 million miles a year, which is a 50% reduction in how we're gonna be moving trash. So I'm very excited for it for the general public. What they can be happy about is that in and around commercial areas, you're gonna see a lot of cleanliness now because the companies we've chosen are better companies. They're companies that uh take care of their work workers that clean up after themselves that have had a track record. In New York City of doing great work. You won't see these folks just throwing trash, letting it fall everywhere, not picking it up. The professionalism is gonna go up. So we should be, we should be excited about a more modern version of trash that is happening almost everywhere else except here in New York City. I feel like you're talking about those trucks we saw this week. Yeah, those trucks that have existed for like, 20 years. And when we see it we throw a parade. It's, it's a funny thing. Uh, but when it comes to trash, we've been doing it the same way for such a long time. Kurt. Uh, that anything we see that's different. It feels like a lot. But, yeah, other cities and other states have been doing that type of work for decades. All right. Well, we've got your state of the borough address coming up next week. Welcome back to S to VP everybody as BP Antonio Reynoso with us tonight and we were talking before about things that are coming up this month and right now it's community board application season. This is a big deal. I know you've been very much trying to get people to sign up here in the borough. Please join the community board. It's a lot of fun. It's uh the foundational piece of civic engagement in our, our borough in our city. So we want you to join. Um Also there's term limits to community boards coming up in a couple of years, which means it's gonna be a big turnover and we rather not be so big and that we introduce new people to it now, so that when it does happen, the transition and the institutional knowledge is still there. So we need you. So please join the community board. Anyone can join. I think you gotta be like 15 or 16 years old and just, and just be a resident of Brooklyn, pray in Brooklyn or work in Brooklyn. Um So please join, it's a great way to get involved, that's for sure. And another way that you can kind of get involved in what's going on here in the borough is to pay attention to your state of the borough address, which I know is coming up on the 13th, the state of the borough is coming up. We're very excited for it. Uh, it's gonna be a lot of fun is what we try to mostly have. It's just introducing people to the work that we committed to, how far along we've gotten on that. But also what the future of Brooklyn looks like. Um, and we have this great presentation that we're gonna make a sneak peek. This is the first time folks are hearing it, but we're gonna be talking about, uh, our waterways and really talking about how we move freight in our city, uh, in the 19 fifties before the 19 fifties, we moved a lot of our commercial goods through our waterways. We had almost half a million jobs, uh, in New York and New Jersey in New York and now in New York and New Jersey, we're talking about barely 250,000 jobs. So it got cut in half even when you combine the two states. Um, and what happens is that 70% of the trucks in our city are just moving through our city. They're not stopping to make stops or anything. So the traffic you're sitting in, you're part of the problem. But also these trucks are just moving through it. Um, that we could, we could reroute do our waterways, but we divested the same way with nature. We just talked about sun down there. We talk about our MT A. We divested on our waterfront. So now it's very expensive to get these docks back up and running to get our, our, our barges ready to go. Uh, but if we do the work which has been researched um by federal state and local work and we start doing the work, now, we can start moving freight in our goods that are in higher demand because of Amazon and all this target and everyone's ordering. Now, we have to think about our future and I really feel that uh what we're gonna do when it comes to freight is gonna change the way we look and, and function as a city. So I'm really excited about it. And those are you gonna be your major talking points as far as the state of the, that's one of them. Uh I'd like to, to, to think it's gonna be fun. Uh But we have like cool maps that make it uh a better presentation than what I'm doing right now. But I, I guarantee people are gonna like it and it's just that I'm thinking about you how we can change the city and how we can change our borough uh with thoughtful and meaningful ideas, not just waking up and doing what, what we feel like doing, but thinking about what what we can fix that is a problem now so that your kids no no longer, no longer have to deal with it. So I hope that people appreciate our long term planning and thinking our comprehensive planning. Um And this is one of those things that you're gonna see. So, have you decided on your walkout song yet? Not yet. It won't be uh the song that we've been hearing a lot recently. So I feel bad for Jay Z and for Alicia Keys, but we're not playing that. I know they're not getting any play anytime soon. No, not any time soon. No. Ok.
