A pair of Brooklyn elected officials are expressing their outrage over a proposed Amazon delivery station.
Assemblyman Charles Barron and Councilwoman Inez Barron say they are upset that they had to learn about a new Amazon delivery station in their district from the media, rather than the company itself.
Amazon says it signed a lease for a 211,000-square-foot building on Flatlands Avenue that now houses a bus depot.
The station will receive and sort packages before being loaded onto vehicles for delivery. The company stated that it offers competitive pay and benefits with worker safety in mind.
However, Barron pointed to the Staten Island location where workers have been vocal about what they describe as mistreatment. Barron also voiced environmental concerns.
"This is a community which already has children who have high levels of asthma. You have high levels of breathing problems," says Barron. "Again, it's located directly across the street from a school and diagonally across from a very dense public housing development.
Local leaders say that although they support job opportunities, the people of the community deserve better.
The delivery station is slated to open next year. The assembly member and council member say they are looking at all legal options to see how they can ensure this deal would benefit the community.
