A stretch of Atlantic Avenue is steps closer to getting a new look. City officials are working to redevelop an approximate 13 block stretch of Atlantic Avenue and neighboring blocks under a project known as the Atlantic Avenue Mixed-Use Plan. It calls for constructing 4,600 homes. The goal is to make the area safer and more sustainable for the community.
"I believe we focused on many things," says Elaine Weinstein, of Prospect Heights. Weinstein was part of the steering committee tasked with voicing community input and concerns, which included making Atlantic Avenue friendlier for pedestrians. "I think makes it the kind of strategic plan that has an open ear. People were really listening to what the community has to stay."
While there is concern redeveloping this area will push some residents and businesses out, local officials say there are protections in place to keep them in the community.
"That's also one of the things I fought for in terms of levels of affordability and new housing developments is making sure those levels of affordability actually meet the needs of people who are already in the area," says City Council Member Crystal Hudson.
The plan is still under review. A series of hearings will need to take place before the City Council makes its final vote. That's expected to take place next year.
