A new audit from the comptroller claims the New York City Housing Authority failed a requirement to hire residents.

City Comptroller Scott Stringer says NYCHA was not ensuring that contractors hire low-income workers and NYCHA residents even though it is required by law.

He says NYCHA failed to stop contractors who were not in compliance with the federal law. The audit also found $180,000 in potential lost wages for NYCHA residents.

NYCHA officials say that this figure was inaccurate since the comptroller only looked at a small sample of contracts.

Residents News 12 spoke with say they believe NYCHA residents should always have the first dibs on getting hired.
