Police say two people were taken into custody Saturday and charged with 11 counts in connection to the death of a 1-year-old boy and the injury of three other children at a Kingsbridge day care facility.

Police say 41-year-old Carlisto Avecedo Brito and 36-year-old Grei Mendez face charges including manslaughter, assault, criminal possession and endangering the welfare of a child.

The New York City Mayor’s Office stated during a briefing late Friday night that children who were found unresponsive at the Divino Niño Daycare on 2707 Morris Ave. showed symptoms of opioid exposure.

Police say officers responded to a 911 call at the day care just before 3 p.m. on Friday. They say officers found three young children unconscious and unresponsive at the facility.

Those children included a 1-year-old boy, a 2-year-old boy and an 8-month-old girl. Officials say the children were transferred to Montefiore Medical Center, where they were administered Narcan.

Police say the 1-year-old identified as Nicholas Dominici was pronounced dead. The 2-year-old boy was listed in critical condition and the 8-month-old girl was in stable condition as of Saturday night.

"NYPD executed a search warrant at this daycare center, where we discovered a kilo press. This is an item commonly used by drug dealers to package large quantities of drugs. This is an active criminal investigation,” said NYPD Chief Detective Joe Kenny.

Police told News 12 that a fourth child who was removed from the facility earlier in the day also later began to show symptoms of opioid exposure. Narcan was also administered to that child who was in stable condition as of Saturday night.

Police last inspected the building on Sept. 9 but found no violations.

News 12 was still waiting to hear back from the medical examiner on an official cause of death of the 1-year-old as of Saturday night.
