Authorities say guns were seized at three city schools on the heels of a spike in gun violence over the past several weeks.
Officers say a 17-year-old boy got into some form of a dispute with another student at Franklin Delano Roosevelt High School.
As school safety officers separated the pair in a fight, a loaded gun was found on that teen’s waistband.
Police say two other guns were seized from teens at schools in the Bronx.
The NYC School Safety Coalition says a loaded .32-caliber revolver was found on a 15-year-old student at Mott Haven High School during a random screening.
They say an unloaded revolver was found inside the backpack of an 18-year-old student during daily scanning at Adlai Stevenson High School. He was arrested by police.
Authorities say that teen is charged with criminal possession of a weapon, obstructing governmental administration and disorderly conduct.
“Gun violence epidemic has really taken our communities and us all under siege,” says Mona Davids, of the coalition. “It's not just in our communities, but in our schools. We really need our city, whoever our new mayor is going to be, to take this seriously.”
The Department of Education told News 12 in a statement, “Weapons of any kind have absolutely no place in our schools, and our outstanding school safety agents swiftly and safely recovered these items during screenings, ensuring that all students and staff are safe.”
