Police say a man died in a stabbing Monday morning in Brooklyn, just 1 mile from his home.
The NYPD says 32-year-old Ryan Carson was stabbed in the chest multiple times at the intersection of Malcolm X Boulevard and Lafayette Avenue around 4 a.m.
Over 100 people came together for a candlelit vigil in memory of Carson on Monday night. Those in attendance say that Carson and his girlfriend had just left a wedding and were attempting to head home for the night before he was stabbed.
Close friends and family of Ryan Carson say that he was a voice for many, advocating for environmental issues and overdose prevention. One of his close friends was state Assemblymember Emily Gallagher.
"You know it’s hard when the person you go to to talk about grief is the one who died," said Gallagher. "I didn’t believe it at first because we all were getting ready for his birthday this weekend or next weekend... he had planned his birthday party over a month in advance and kept sending reminders so I said I was going to be there and there wasn’t expecting I wouldn’t see him again. It’s been really difficult to comprehend."
The incident took place across from P.S. 26, but did not appear to impact school operations.
Police say the suspect fled on foot and is still at large.
