Friends of the 59-year-old woman who died following Sunday morning’s Morrisania apartment building fire are mourning the sudden loss.
After receiving a call reporting a fire on the 13th floor of a residential building at 1408 Webster Ave. early Sunday morning, first responders found the victim inside her apartment. Police say she was pronounced dead after being transported to Bronx Lebanon Hospital in critical condition.
Robert Nice, who was friends with the victim for over 40 years, says witnessing firemen carry her out of the apartment was devastating.
"It hurt me, it really hurt me,” he said. "I knew her very well. I grew up with her in the building."
“She was a good woman. Her whole family was good to me. She was good to me,” he said.
Nice says he would feel more peace if he knew the cause of the fire that took his friend’s life. However, police say they do not have any answers currently. The FDNY fire marshal is still working to determine the cause of the fire.
