Officials have revealed the cause of death for the 3-year-old boy in East Flatbush.
An autopsy has shown that the cause was drowning. Police say the toddler, Denim Brown, was found face-down in a bathtub full of water. The medical examiner also discovered that Brown suffered blunt force trauma to his head and face before he died.
This information comes after the arrest of 29-year-old Kevin James. Police say James is charged with murder, assault and endangering a child.
A memorial now grows inside the front entrance of the apartment building where the boy was found dead.
The criminal complaint obtained by News 12 states that on Sunday, March 17, James was seen leaving an apartment with the 3-year-old victim at around 7 p.m. before the victim was found in a neighboring apartment's bathtub. The relationship between James and the child remains unclear.
"It sounds vicious, horrible and it sounds inconceivable. I didn't know the mother or the child personally but I used to see them and they looked happy and successful and ready for the world. And it's a sad loss," said neighbor Brian Hilton.
James is due back in court on Friday, March 22.
