A baby girl in a stroller was killed by a stray bullet during a gang-related shooting in Bushwick on Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.
Police say one of the moped-riding suspects, believed to be the shooter, is in custody. The second man remains on the run, and a "citywide manhunt" is underway, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch says.
The 7-month-old was struck at around 1:20 p.m. after the duo opened fire on the corner of Moore and Humboldt streets, where multiple children and adults were standing.
Heavy NYPD and FDNY presence overtook the intersection, just steps away from a day care.
A witness called the News 12 newsroom minutes after the shooting and said they saw a person running with the stroller moments later, shouting, "My baby! My baby!"
Authorities say the baby's father ran her five blocks to NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull. The baby did not survive.
An NYPD Crime Stoppers van at 131 Moore St. projected images of the suspected gunmen on a moped. It says authorities are offering up to $3,500 for information regarding the fatal shooting.
The man on the run was last seen moving toward the NYCHA Marcy Houses wearing gray pants, a white t-shirt and a black surgical mask.
Police say the moped riders crashed into an oncoming car and were thrown from the moped near Siegel Street and Manhattan Avenue while attempting to flee the scene.
A second crime scene was established here, where vehicle debris was seen scattered in the road.
Surveillance video of the crash shows the rear passenger, who police say matches the description of the shooter, hit the pavement so hard that his shoes fly off.
Authorities received a 911 call after the crash for an injured man. He was taken to the hospital and placed in custody for a separate incident, a domestic violence-related robbery. He has not officially been charged for the shooting as of Wednesday evening.
Police say the moped was recovered five blocks west of the shooting, at Warsaw Place and Flushing Avenue, and has been secured for processing by its Crime Scene Unit.
Authorities are working to figure out who was the intended target of the shooting, according to Tisch.
During a press conference on Wednesday evening, Mayor Zohran Mamdani sent his condolences to the baby's family and emphasized the gravity of the incident.
"There are no words that can mend the heartbreak this family is feeling now," Mamdani said.
