Long Islanders are joining together online to help each other by giving away items and services for free.

The Buy Nothing Project is an international movement to reduce waste and connect neighbors to give and receive items and services.

Jennifer Ponchione was part of the project in New York City. When she moved to Babylon Village, it was one of the first things she searched for.

"Part of it was my own selfish reasons because I loved the group so much - and also - I thought it would add to the community because it is a great way to get to know your neighbors and help each other out," Ponchione says.

Ponchione reached out to Jessica Abadir, who runs the project in other hamlets, and they started the Facebook group for the village of Babylon.

Residents say it's a good way to meet neighbors, reduce the amount of waste they produce and save money on items that someone else might be willing to give away.

"So here in Babylon, I guess you can say - reduce, reuse, regift," Abadir says. "It can be anything from barbecues to used fence pieces, clothes, furniture and more."
