A veteran Bay Ridge volunteer firefighter is calling on others to swell the ranks of the FDNY?s volunteer department again.
Stan Hirschkorn is the assistant chief of the Association of Auxiliary Firefighters. Hirschkorn worked as an FDNY dispatcher for 25 years and says he understands the need for more assistance. There are currently only 50 Brooklyn volunteers who help direct traffic and provide water and supplies to firefighters on the job. New recruit Michael Anthony Nardiello says he joined so he could give back to the community.
In addition to working to boost enrollment, the Association of Auxiliary Firefighters says it is focusing on disaster relief to better meet the needs of New York City residents.
