What began as a frightening afternoon in Bay Ridge turned into a community effort for safer streets.

Eleven days ago, a car crashed into several vehicles on Narrows Avenue, pinning a young girl against a wall. She had been walking home from school with her friends, the same three 12-year-old girls who witnessed it happen.

With support from their mothers and grandmother, the girls created a petition calling for speed bumps near schools across Bay Ridge.

Their families helped them write the petition, gather signatures and reach out to local leaders.

The girls also spoke with Community Board 10 district manager Josephine Beckmann after filing a 311 request, taking their first steps toward real action.

Since the petition was posted, it has gained more than 800 signatures and growing support from neighbors who want to prevent future accidents.

The girls plan to meet with city officials to discuss next steps.

For their mothers and grandmother, this moment is one of pride, as they watch their daughters lead an effort to make Bay Ridge a safer place for everyone.
