be Well: Cold plunges to relieve aches and pains

This week on be. Well, we're trying out some of the hottest wellness trends to see if they really work. And today's hot trend is actually very, very cold. Oh my gosh, talk about cold plun is I, I mean, it was just agonizing, but I promised this to relieve aches and pains and even reduce the stress. So I recently visited the Bayport Athletic Recovery Center to find out for myself. You can't tell by looking at it, but this water is ice cold. So how cold is this water? You're about to be submerging 48 degree water. Oh, this is called a cold plunge and it is so cold. What are the benefits of doing this? Uh One of the main benefits is the muscle recovery. What happens is you after a workout, you submerge yourself in this type of water and you actually feel revived. So one of that's one of the main benefits and there's mental benefits as, as well as so mental health reasons. So do most people do this after they've worked out or can people who don't work out at all actually partake in these cold? Yes, both. So if you work out, this should definitely be part of your routine to recovery. And if you just want to feel great. Also another reason to get in, I'm terrified right now. How long do I have to stay in this cold water? The standard protocol is three minutes and I know we can get you to three minutes. How, how bad do people react when they do this? For the first, it varies. The first time is the most challenging time for everyone. I encourage people to scream, use any words they'd like to. I probably will. And it actually does help with the process. If you hold it in, you're not doing yourself any benefit. Ok? Let me just suck it up and do it. I'm gonna get in, I'm gonna let you describe what I'm going through while I'm in there because I may not be able to talk. All right. Are we ready? Ready? Go nice and easy. There you go. Nice and easy. There you go. And you slide it and you're good. No, no, I just want you to try to stay as calm as you can. There you go. What's happening right now? Your body is going into the fighter flight. Try to save. You're ok. You'll be able to get your breath back in just 20 to 30 seconds. Try not to tense up, try not to fight it. You're ok. There you go. It does, it does. What's happening right now? Is your, your body is sending out warmer blood from your extremities to protect your core organs. All right. It's not food but it's so good for you. You can definitely. Absolutely. So what, what we gonna shoot for? We're gonna shoot for three minutes. But I, what I, what I, I want you to, I get you and it kind of hurts because my body, oh, I think I feel the benefit of it. I think I'm ok. Why would you do this? It, it is definitely challenging. I definitely feel more awake. I am. My body is still a little tight in sense. I could feel, I actually OK. Honestly, my legs were a little sore because I had a leg day yesterday or the day before, still trying to breathe to catch my breath. But the soreness is going in my leg. So I get were you were you were somewhere for at least a minute and 10? Oh, that's pretty good. That was accomplished. I, I know it wasn't 33 minutes but I don't think, I mean, it was very agonizing actually. And, but you could see like why people do it. That was just a minute. And your legs feel brand new. I feel like I can go in for a little bit longer. But, you know, we only had so much time in this television segment. Next time. I think I'm gonna stay in a little bit longer to see if I could accomplish it again. Remind me because that's the only way I'm gonna get in again. What are some of these benefits? Your physical recovery and mental health? It is definitely one of those things that if you have any issues uh with mental health, physical recovery, the cold punch is such an amazing reset to the body that you really can't find either. Now, after this shit, people go sit in the sauna, go, go turn on the heat. What I usually, for the first time, I usually be as pure as you can just probably dry yourself off, put some nice warm clothes on and enjoy your day. You'll notice as you, the day progresses, your mood is elevated, you feel better, you're happier, you feel fantastic and you might even think of doing it again.
