Dozens of residents of a Bedford-Stuyvesant apartment building are at their wits end with deteriorating living conditions.
The tenants at the Putnam Avenue building say they cannot find their landlord and don?t know where to go for help. They say their complaints to the superintendent have fallen on deaf ears. Tenants report that windows are broken, hallways are filthy and the elevator in the six-story building has not worked for weeks. They say their rent checks are being returned by mail. Also, since the building is not secured, squatters have set up in vacant apartments leading to dangerous situations. Friday, a fire was ignited and two tenants were sent to the hospital.
City officials say the building has not had an owner since December. A spokesperson Housing Preservation and Development say they are evaluating the situation to possibly send the issue to court. A judge could decide to appoint a seven-day administrator to act as a landlord until a permanent landlord is found.
