A lack of funding and red tape is threatening to put the Bedford-Stuyvesant Volunteer Ambulance Corps out of commission.
Co-founder James Robinson says the corps is in need of a bigger trailer to operate out of. The borough president?s office says funding could be tied up for as long as a year. Robinson also worries that the city may evict the corps at any time from the plot of land at Marcus Garvey Boulevard and Greene Avenue.
The corps came to Bed-Stuy in 1988, at the height of the crack epidemic, when many calls were drug-related. The corps has been saving lives ever since and helping to free up other ambulance services to help more people in the community. The corps has about 20 staffers, but Robinson says he?s always in need of more volunteers.
