A Brooklyn teacher is charged with sexually abusing a teenage girl in Bensonhurst.
Police sources told News 12 that 48-year-old Steven Schnee was arrested on Wednesday after inappropriate behavior with a 16-year-old student.
Sources said Schnee was taken into custody shortly after 4 p.m. inside the Lafayette Educational Campus, which houses five schools located at 2630 Beson Ave.
A Department of Education (DOE) source told News 12 that the building was placed in a “soft lockdown” during the time of the arrest.
Schnee is accused of putting his hands on the victim’s upper thighs over her clothing and making inappropriate comments, according to police sources.
The Brooklyn DA’s Office said the incident happened shortly after 3 p.m. on Feb. 12, 2026.
Parents told News 12 on Thursday that they were hearing about the incident for the first time, and they were never notified by the DOE.
“It’s horrible,” said Nataliya Dveyrina. “I have two children here in the school, and I’m in shock.”
“As a parent, of course, it scares the hell out of me,” said Samar Shabana. “I hope that more security and more cameras are put up and this doesn't happen again.”
Schnee is charged with forcible touching, endangering the welfare of a child, sexual abuse, and harassment.
Statement from a DOE spokesperson: “The safety and well-being of our students will always be our top priority. The alleged behavior is reprehensible and has absolutely no place in our schools. This individual has been reassigned away from students. Should these allegations be confirmed, we will seek termination.”
