City, state and federal officials announced Monday that New York City will receive more than $260 million in federal transportation funding to cover some of the costs of major projects in Brooklyn.
The money, which was allocated to New York City from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, will help pay for transportation and road projects in Brooklyn that were long put on hold due to lack of funding. Officials say some Brooklyn projects previously on the chopping block, like repairs to the Coney Island boardwalk, will now be completed because of the stimulus money. The projects are expected to create or sustain about 32,000 jobs, develop the local economy and improve transportation.
Included in the list of more than 30 projects are improvements to the Brooklyn and Greenpoint Avenue bridges. Renovations will also be made to overpasses and main Brooklyn roads.
Brooklyn officials say work on the road projects could begin as early as this spring.
