A Brooklyn lawmaker is blasting the city for allegedly not inspecting or regulating fire escapes. The findings of the study, says Assemblyman Nick Perry (D-Brooklyn), is putting firefighters and residents at risk. He says his study found that some fire repairs had broken or bent ladders and others were inoperable or blocked from being used.Perry is demanding that the city start regularly sending inspectors to check the status of fire escapes. The city is required to inspect fire escapes every year, but the assemblyman claims that it has taken 18 months for some fire escapes to be inspected. The responsibility to check fire escapes lies with the fire department, the Department of Housing Preservation and Development and the Department of Buildings.
